"Trump Admin Rejected Anti-Refugee Study It Ordered Because the Result Turned Out Pro-Refugee"

"Hope for a New Life" by Warren Richardson won this year's World Press Photo Award.

On 19 September 2017, the Daily Kos, published an article titled "Trump Admin Rejected Anti-Refugee Study It Ordered Because the Result Turned Out Pro-Refugee." The Department of Health and Human Services, in commissioned by the Trump administration, conducted research "to provide a rationale for reducing the number of refugees." However, the results "reveal[ed] that refugees...contribute tens of billions more dollars than they cost." Between 2005 and 2014, refugees contributed approximately $269.1 billion. The Trump administration allegedly suppressed the research because "[t]he Trump administration is debating whether to cut [the] flo[w of refugees] from around 110,000 per year to below 50,000.

In a succinct manner, the article outlines the hypocrisy of the Trump administration in reference to refugees. The administration has consistently denied racial motivation for denying refugees, and instead focused on both potential violence and economic costs, both of which are unsubstantiated claims. The presented information should concern the public because the shame of our nation rests in how we treat the helpless. Our ultimate judgment will come from turning away refugees at our doorstep.
